Our ISR® volunteers – Sanjib Dey (Senior Executive – Purchase) and Sarbani Sarkar (Executive – Administration) – from Apeejay Shipping and Shaunli Bose (Executive – Administration) from Apeejay Real Estate – conducted an art & craft session for children suffering from various types of cancer at Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre and Research Institute, also known as Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital, in association with Rotaract Club of Calcutta. The volunteers taught the children, aged 3 – 10 years, how to create greeting cards and gave them chocolates from Flurys, our 90-year-old iconic tea room, at the end of the session.

She was admitted to Thakurpukur Cancer hospital just 6 months back. Her parents told me that she was a meritorious student and had a very good hand writing. She showed me a Bengali poem written in her note book. About 2 years back, she felt a pain in the knee. After treatment from a local doctor, she became better. But again, she faced some problems. Ultimately, it was found that there was one big tumor inside her bone on her left leg. Just 5 months back, her left leg was operated. Now she is alive with right leg only. Her treatment is going on now and the doctors said that she will take another 3 months to get well. She had got some help from the health department of the state government. On her face, however, no trace of pain was to be found. She didn’t know that she would have to spend the rest of her life with one leg. With her left hand, she continued to draw as her right hand is fixed with saline bottle. It was really heart touching to see such a little soul suffering in that manner. I thank the ISR® team for giving me the chance to visit these children”.
